Trans-Tasman Law and Legal Practice Conference

The University of Canterbury in conjunction with the
New Zealand Australia Research Centre (NZARC) is very pleased to invite you to a conference entitled “Trans-Tasman Law and Legal Practice” to be held at the School of Law, University of Canterbury, Christchurch, 27-28 August 2010.
The conference organisers are extremely grateful for the generous sponsorship received from New Zealand Law Foundation and Minter Ellison Rudd Watts Lawyers .
The conference is designed to bring together legal experts comprising academics, judges, law commissioners and practitioners to discuss various legal relationships between New Zealand and Australia .
Papers will be presented on:
- trans-Tasman federalism from a constitutional perspective;
- the future of the trans-Tasman judicial area;
- trans-Tasman legal history;
- the trans-Tasman Proceedings Acts;
- trans-Tasman legal reform and perspectives from practitioners;
- trends and developments in trans-Tasman family law;
- the inter-relationship of legal practice from a practical perspective;
- trans-Tasman legal sporting issues.
Plenary addresses will be delivered by the Hon Michael Kirby AC CMG and Chief Justice Diana Bryant. Other distinguished speakers include David Howman ( Director-General of the World Anti-Doping Agency) Professor Reid Mortenson (University of Southern Queensland) and Emeritus Professor John Burrows QC, Law Commissioner, Wellington, New Zealand.
The papers presented by Minter Ellison Rudd Watts Lawyers will focus on the dilemma of legal alignment with Australia and highlight significant problems in trans-Tasman legal practice.
Research and debate on the legal relationships between the two countries are essential and timely.
